RYAN Williams is confident Oxford United will have at least a play-off place come the end of the season.
A key reason behind the winger’s decision in December to extend his loan from Fulham for the rest of the campaign was the chance to win promotion.
Like the rest of the camp, Williams is focused on gaining one of the three automatic spots in Sky Bet League Two.
But with a ten-point cushion over Plymouth Argyle, the side just outside the play-off positions, the U’s are well-placed to claim a top-seven finish.
“We’re in a win-win situation I guess, because if we don’t get automatic promotion I don’t think we can slip up that much to not get in the play-offs,” Williams said.
“It’s exciting, who wouldn’t want to be in this position?
“Hopefully we can do our best and get automatic promotion.
“It’s what we all want. I know the fans love to go to Wembley, but I’m sure it would be better for their nerves if we can get a top-three place.”
The 20-year-old made his first start for a month in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Morecambe after recovering from a knee injury.
Alfie Potter was in the side following a long lay-off, while Dave Kitson and Deane Smalley could return to the squad for tomorrow’s trip to promotion rivals Rochdale.
With James Constable, David Connolly and Sean Rigg also fit, caretaker manager Mickey Lewis is spoilt for choice at the top end of the pitch.
Williams said: “It’s good, as I guess teams don’t know what we’re going to do because we’ve got so many attacking options.”
While Williams has enjoyed a fine season at United, the turmoil at his parent club continues.
The Australian, who is out of contract this summer, is yet to meet Felix Magath, Fulham’s third manager this season.
He said: “I’ve spoken with Fulham and they want me to go in and meet him.
“I’ll do that when I get a day off, but I think Fulham are more worried about staying in the Premier League and I’m worried about getting promoted.”
