Frances Houghton made a quick recovery from her unscheduled dip in the Tideway, by striking gold in the National Champion-ships at Nottingham, writes Mike Rosewell.

Wheatley-based Houghton won with regular partner Vicky Meyer-Laker in the double sculls and also took gold in the Leander eight.

Oxford’s Katie Greves was in the eight with Houghton that took the gold and her younger sister, Carolyn, the Wallingford captain, was in the quad, composed completely of club members, which won silver.

There was also a silver for Oxford Brookes in the women’s coxless fours with Olivia Carnegie-Brown and Yasmin Tredell in the crew. Oxford’s Olympic star Andy Triggs Hodge sat out the event with a medical exemption and enjoyed celebrating the birth of his son the week before.

Meanwhile, Houghton’s alma mater, Headington Girls School, picked up three top 20 finishes in their first transatlantic competition.

At the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Headington’s first and second eights, watched by Paralympic gold medallist Lily van den Broecke, came tenth and 17th respectively in the women’s youth eights.

There were 85 entries in the race, and they were the only school to get two eights into the top 20.

The coxless four, competing in the Directors’ Challenge Women’s Quads came 13th out of a field of 30.

Director of rowing Ryan Demaine said: “There was a great atmosphere. It was relaxed while absolutely professional.”

The girls, aged between 15 and 18, are now training ready to compete in the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia on Sunday, when they will enter two eights and a coxed four.
