GREENE KING OXFORD & DISTRICT LEAGUE FINALS NIGHT

Phil Adams (Cricketers) took the singles crown for a record-breaking 12th time by defeating Kevin Giles (Three Pigeons) 2-1 in a low-scoring final at Oxford Sports Club, writes ANDY BEAL.

Giles set four in the opening leg in front of a packed crowd, and that proved enough as Adams fell short.

Adams set only three in the next leg, but Giles could muster only two in reply to send the final into a decider.

Again Giles set, managing only one doll, which Adams easily went past to see him extend his own record of title triumphs.

It was one of four wins on the night for the champion, who is moving out of the area.

He teamed up with Kevin Baker to retain the Oxford Pairs Cup by defeating teammates Barry and Geoff Townsend 2-0, with leg scores of 8-6, 7-6.

Adams also featured in the Premier Section champions Cricketers B’s side, which lifted the Greene King Cup, with a 2-0 victory over Six Bells C Kidlington.

Cricketers set the opening leg with 28, which proved too many for their opponents.

They then set 31 in the next leg, with Francis Hillier whipping off a six, which again Six Bells could not match.

Adams also teamed up with Baker, Pip Goulding and Barry Townsend in the Cricketers side which won the Monty Greenaway fours when they defeated Rose Hill Club A 2-0, with leg scores of 17-12, 14-13.

In the Ted Houghton Supplementary singles final, Chris Webb (Six Bells B Quarry) defeated Brian Reidy (Priory) 2-1.

Webb set and won the opening leg 4-1, but Reidy levelled in the next 3-1.

The decider saw Webb set three, which Reidy matched to send it into a three-stick shoot-out.

Webb set with two, which proved too many for Reidy, giving the Six Bells man the first of four wins.

He was a member of the Six Bells B side who captured the Jim Whitbread Cup by defeating King & Queen B 2-0.

They then completed a double over King & Queen in the Oxford Fours with the same scoreline.

Webb finished off a fine night by winning the lower section pairs on his own – with Phil Wilkins unavailable – when he defeated Chequers B’s Ben Green and Paul Alder 2-0.

In the Under 18s final, Liam Costar (Masons), with six dolls, defeated holder Elliot Greenough (5) and Josh Breakspear (4) to claim the title in a closely-fought contest.

Ian and Dave Bowler (Vikings Sports) pipped Steve and Craig Greenough (Garsington Sports) 2-1 in the Parent & Child final.

The Bowlers won the opening leg 6-5, only for the Greenoughs to level in the second leg by the same scoreline.

The Greenoughs set six in the decider, but the Bowlers edged home to take the title 7-6.
