Steve Howkins’s late penalty spared Ardley United’s blushes in a 2-1 win at Hellenic League Division 1 West side Easington Sports in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup first round.

Extra time was looming when Troy Bryan was adjudged to have been tripped in the area in the 86th minute, and Howkins dispatched the spot-kick to give the Hellenic League Premier Division high-fliers victory.

Ryan Brooks had fired Ardley ahead in the 27th minute, only for Easington to level, before half-time when James McMahon shot past keeper Jack Harding.

Headington Amateurs suffered the agony of going out 4-3 after extra time at home to Henley Town.

Amateurs led 2-1 until six minutes from the end of normal time, with Paul Hedger’s first-half brace sandwiched around a Louis Howell penalty.

But Billy Gordon grabbed a late equaliser, and substitute Sam Cripps scored twice in the first half of extra time.

Tom Payne pulled one back, but it was not enough to save the home side.
