Alex Davies says London Welsh will be keeping their feet on the gas for today’s British & Irish Cup opener.

Greene King IPA Championship leaders Welsh take on fellow Exiles London Scottish at Newbury RFC’s Monks Lane on the back of four straight league wins.

While a return to the Premiership is Welsh’s priority, they cannot afford to let their intensity slip in the cup.

“You can’t do better than four out of four, everything is going really well,” said Davies, who makes his first start of the season at scrum half.

“We are still only playing at 70 per cent. Once we click, we will really get going.

“We are trying to build some momentum going into these B&I games.

“Winning becomes a habit. We aren’t going to take any of these games lightly.

“That way, we will come to the Cornish Pirates league match on October 26 in the right frame of mind.”

Head coach Justin Burnell added: “We will be giving the competition the same respect as we are giving the league.

“We are very much looking forward to it.

“It is an exciting competition with teams such as Munster, Leinster and Edinburgh Academicals in it.”

Davies has had to bide his time for a start after getting injured against Chinnor in pre-season.

But he made a big impact off the bench against Rotherham last week, kicking two penalties to win the match.

Davies said: “It was very frustrating getting injured at Chinnor because I wanted to show what I could do.

“But it was nice to contribute to the team at Rotherham.

“Gordon Ross had not missed a kick in 25 attempts, but I think I have a bit more range than him.

“He is a big team player and gave the chance to me. I am just glad I took it.”

Davies’s place-kicking is just one facet of a versatile game he hopes will convince Burnell and his coaching team to hand him more starts.

“I played nine last year in the Premiership and can also play at No 9, ten or 15,” said Davies.

“It is just wherever the team needs me.”
