JOHNNY Mullins is happy to put up with plenty of banter from his Oxford United teammates about his nickname if it means the goals keep coming.
The centre back again showed his knack for being in the right place at the right time by grabbing an equaliser in the 2-2 draw at Cheltenham Town.
It was the summer signing’s third crucial goal of the season, which have earned the U’s an extra four points.
After netting a late equaliser against Wycombe Wanderers last month, Mullins said his new nickname was ‘The Magnet’.
The 27-year-old has regretted it ever since and is keen to drop it, but admitted it was a price worth paying for the team to continue doing well.
He said: “I’m trying to get away from this magnet stuff.
“I’ve got loads of stick for it, but thankfully it dropped for me and I managed to put it away.
“I was just pleased that someone got a goal, because I thought we more than deserved a point from the game.
“The lads said the finish was OK. I managed to catch it quite sweetly.
“I will take it, I get quite excited when I score and I got a bit of stick for that, but I’m just over the moon that we’ve got a point.”
It saw Mullins join Deane Smalley, Danny Rose and Alfie Potter on three goals for the campaign.
The former Reading trainee intends to enjoy being at the top while it lasts, but fully expects to be left behind as the campaign wears on.
He said: “I was told I’m joint top scorer, but come the end of the season the big boys up front will be much further ahead than me I hope. “Whilst I’m scoring I’m not going to complain about it and I do enjoy doing it. “I’m just pleased we’ve got a point, we remain unbeaten and we have kept the run going.”
While Mullins has made useful contributions going forward, his main focus is on preventing goals at the other end.
Despite being content with a point, he was disappointed with both Cheltenham’s efforts.
He said: “In football you are never happy. We don’t want to concede goals and we will look at it and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But you have got to look at the positives. “We have gone behind in a difficult environment and we have managed to come back and get a point, twice.”
