PETER Edwards has particular reason to relish London Welsh’s friendly clash with Llanelli Scarlets tomorrow, as he played for the visitors last season.

Prop Edwards lined up for the Scarlets when they beat Welsh 23-17 this time last year in a pre-season game in Llanelli.

Now having made the switch to the Exiles, he knows what sort of test his new side face at the Kassam Stadium.

“The Scarlets love attacking rugby and they’re developing their all round game, so it’s going to be interesting,” said Edwards.

“We’ll have to respect them every time they’ve got the ball, but they’ll have to respect us as well.”

“The Scarlets are a great club and a passionate club, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

“They play a great brand of rugby and they’ve very passionate supporters. There are a lot of similarities to London Welsh – they’ve both got great history.”

Edwards played 40 times for the Scarlets after joining the club in 2010, making his debut against Benetton Treviso in September of that year.

He said: “There’s no better feeling than playing a Heineken Cup team and one of the most famous clubs in Wales.

“If you play for the Scarlets then you’re one of the best players in Wales.

“They’re going to be coming to the Kassam with a squad full of boys wanting to impress, especially some of the younger players who did really well with Wales Under 20s. “There’s a fair few of those guys in the Scarlets set-up and they’re going to be keen to push through into the first team. I think it will be a very good game.”

While Welsh warmed up for the Llanelli game by running in 17 tries in a 107-5 win at Chinnor, the Scarlets lost 23-15 at home to Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs.

Edwards said: “We went to Chinnor to try and put our attacking game into place and it came off, and to also work hard on our defence.

“It was tough; even though the scoreline might not suggest that.

“It was good to be involved on a match-day and it was good for the team to finally play against an opposition.”

The Chinnor match also saw Nathan Trevett throw the gauntlet down to Edwards and this front row colleagues after sprinting over for a debut try.

It’s now up to Edwards and Co to rise to the challenge.

“He’s going to live off that one – he’s got one over the rest of us already. We’re all playing catch up now,” said Edwards.
