Banbury Utd 2 (Morgan 42, Simpson 43)

Chippenham Tn 0

BANBURY United got their Premier Division season off to the best of starts with a convincing home win over Chippenham Town.

Two goals in two minutes from Aaron Morgan and Leon Simpson just before half-time sealed victory.

Banbury nearly went in front on 22 minutes when Adeyinka Talabi curled a shot around Ben John, but saw his effort rebound off the far post.

Lee Phillips’s header hit a post for the visitors on 35 minutes.

Banbury got the breakthrough three minutes before the interval when a cross-cum-shot from Morgan wide on the left flew over the head of John and in via post and with the help of a surprisingly strong wind.

Within a minute it was 2-0 when good build-up play around the edge of the Chippenham penalty area ended with Morgan feeding the ball to Simpson, who finished well from ten yards and celebrated in Usain Bolt style.

Though there were no goals in the second half, Banbury’s performance was arguably much better.

They dominated for long periods and always looked threatening, while the visitors rarely threatened.

Chippenham struggled all afternoon to deal with the 6ft 8in height of Simpson, who battled away up front, causing all sorts of problems with flicks and hassling defenders.

Equally they were unable to deal with the trickery of the smallest player on the field, midfielder Morgan, who was outstanding.
