Following a long winter’s training Abingdon Rowing Club’s junior girls romped home to three victories at the Birmingham Regatta last weekend.

The day started well for Abingdon at Edgbaston Reservoir, with Bethan Stutt and Gabriella James beating the Birmingham crew on their home territory to win the junior 13 girls coxless pairs event.

The two girls then met each other in the singles finals, after both opposition rowers scrat-ched.

James emerged the winner for her second title.

Abingdon’s junior 14 girls coxless pairs of Imogen Almond and Lydia Nuttall completed the club’s treble when beating an older Monmouth crew by more than three lengths in a straight final.

This was a great start to the season with the girls winning three of the five events they entered and nine out of their 12 races.

Two members of this year’s successful Oxford University Boat Race crew visited Cheney School, Oxford, to provide a training session for their Cheney Falcon rowing section.

Club president Alex Davidson, Canadian stroke Malcolm Howard plus Tom Watson, head of the Isis crew, put the pupils through their paces on the nine ergo machines in the school’s gym.

In 2011, Cheney established a formal link with the Falcon Rowing Club in the city.
