JAKE Wright’s outstanding season was reflected as the Oxford United captain won half the trophies at the end of season awards.

The centre back was named the supporters’ player of the season, while he was also the choice of the U’s squad at Sunday’s ceremony.

Wright completed a hat-trick by winning the most man-of-the-match polls on the Oxford Mail website throughout the season.

The 27-year-old was thrilled with the haul, but was quick to acknowledge the role his teammates had played.

“I’m really happy and proud to get the awards,” he said.

“You can’t do everything on your own and I wouldn’t have been playing well if the boys hadn’t been playing well, especially the lads around me at the back.

“They’ve been different class and helped me along.”

James Constable finished as top scorer for the fifth season in a row.

The striker took his tally to 14 with the opening goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Accrington Stanley.

He said: “I think it was the hardest one to win.

“Earlier in the season, I was six or seven goals behind so this was probably the one where I felt the most pressure to get the goals.

“Tommy (Craddock) and Deane (Smalley) were starting most games at the time and it was a real battle for me to get in the side – this makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Andy Whing was the surprise winner of United’s goal of the season, thanks to a spectacular bicycle kick against Rochdale this month.

The combative midfielder has scored just six goals in his career, but three have ended up winning goal of the season.

He said: “I think it’s more the shock factor, that’s why I get it.

“Nobody expects me to score so when I do I get goal of the season.”

Callum O’Dowda, who will turn professional next season, won the young player of the year.

He said: “I’m really happy to receive this award and I think it’s going to be a good season next year.”
