Abingdon United ended their Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West campaign with a home defeat that saw Richie Bourne’s side end the season in 20th position.

However, the outcome of this game could have been very different had a number of near misses inside the opening ten minutes gone in and home striker Aaron Woodley not missed a late penalty with the score at 1-0.

Carl Self hit the bar and Aaron Woodley had his shot cleared off the line as Abingdon started strongly.

At the other end, Luca Riccio headed off the line as Alton Axton’s header seemed destined to find the net.

The rest of the opening period proved an anti-climax, and it wasn’t until James Coates headed the visitors in front five minutes after half-time that the game came to life again.

Coates’s effort was hooked away by a combination of two defenders, but an assistant referee signalled the ball was in, despite Abingdon’s protests.

Tim Haddock missed an open goal for the visitors with ten minutes left, before Abingdon blew a golden chance to level late on.

Woodley was fouled in the box, got up to take the penalty, but saw his effort saved by Tom King.

To rub salt into the wounds, Haddock made the game safe in the last minute, beating two defenders before firing home.
