Oxford's Jason Plato saw his lead reduced to five points in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship standings following the second round at Donington Park.

The MG KX Momentum Racing driver remains top with 92 points after finishing fourth, second and eighth in the three races at the Derbyshire track.

But the nine-point lead following his brace of wins in the opening weekend at Brands Hatch has been cut by Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan.

Plato just missed out on a podium finish in race one as reigning champion Gordon Shedden took a controlled lights-to-flag victory in his Honda Yuasa Racing, ahead of Staffordshire’s Jordan.

The Oxford man battled with Shedden’s teammate, Matt Neal, for third, but was never close enough to make a significant move.

Plato reached a milestone in the second contest with his 400th race in the championship.

And he came close to marking it with a victory, finishing second as Jordan took the chequered flag, with Shedden third and Neal, in his 500th race, fourth.

“It was a good race. Things got close with Matt, but I was worried about the mad Scotsman ahead,” said Plato in jest.

“Gordon drove a good defensive drive, but we were able to get by in the end and score some good points.”

Plato was off the pace in the day’s finale as former champion Colin Turkington made a popular return to the top step of the podium.

He blasted by pole-sitter Tom Onslow-Cole’s VW Passat off the line and immediately pulled clear in the reversed-grid race. He eventually romped to the win, which also marked the maiden victory for the new eBay Motors BMW 125i M Sport and Turkington’s first since his 2009 title winning campaign.

Shedden and Neal completed the podium after the duo muscled past Sam Tordoff’s MG on the final lap.
