OXFORD United captain Jake Wright welcomed the decision to keep Chris Wilder as manager for next season.

The 27-year-old admitted the lack of clarity over the situation had not been ideal, but believes the club have made the right move in giving Wilder a new 12-month contract.

“I’m really happy with the decision, obviously,” he said.

“It’s been a bit uncertain for the last couple of weeks with people not really knowing what’s happening.

“The chairman wanted to keep it to himself with the board, they’ve thought about the plusses and the minuses and I feel he’s come up with the best decision for the club moving forward.”

Few people at the club know Wilder better than the centre back, who has signed for him twice.

He said: “I played for him when I was a kid at Halifax and now here.

“I’ve played the majority of my career for him and don’t get me wrong we have our arguments now and again, but that’s because we’re passionate and want to do well.

“I don’t think you’ll get a man who works harder.

“I’m really happy with the decision. Hopefully we get some good new players in, get everyone fit and we’ll come back bouncing in pre-season.

Wilder came under pressure this season due to mixed results on the pitch, with United missing out on the play-offs.

Wright felt it would have been unfair for the manager to bear all the responsibility, which should also be spread among the playing squad.

He said: “We’ve let him down a few times this season, Fleetwood away (a 3-0 defeat) and some games at home which we should have won.

“We’ve let ourselves down, sometimes I think not enough people have turned up.

“You get the same players doing well every week and others haven’t turned up.

“That’s something we need to change in the summer, we need to get players who want to fight for every point.

“I think if we do that with the right mix of players I think we’ll have a really good chance of getting in the play-offs this time next season.”
