Oxford's double Olympic gold medallist Andy Triggs Hodge changed partners at the British senior and under 23 trials at Caversham at the weekend – but still ended the event with a comfortable win in the men’s pairs.

Partnering his Molesey clubmate Moe Sbihi, instead of his usual partner Peter Reed, Triggs Hodge won by some three seconds over Reed and Alex Gregory, his crewmates in the Olympic gold medal four.

“We knew in training that everything was going pretty well, but you still have to do it on the day,” said Triggs Hodge.

“The only other local first place came from Peter Chambers in the men’s lightweight sculls.

The Oxford Brookes student was chased home by his older brother Richard Chambers and last year’s champion Adam Freeman-Pask.

Wheatley’s Frances Houghton, a veteran of four Olympics, was beaten by a split second in the women’s sculls by Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover.

“I’m pleased with my racing even if I came off the wrong side of a close finish today,” said Houghton whose previous two seasons have been constrained by injury.”

Scott Durant and Matt Tarrant, from Oxford Brookes, and the Oxford University duo of Karl Hudspith and Paul Bennett finished fifth and sixth respectively in the men’s pairs.

Kathryn Twyman and Eleanor Piggott, from Wallingford, came third and fourth respectively in the women’s lightweight sculls.
