Oxford City Stars are celebrating being crowned English National League South Division 2 champions – and they did it in style with an emphatic 9-3 win at Basingstoke Buffalo.

Stars stormed to the title on the back of an impressive 13-match winning streak.

Now they must wait and see which division they will play in next season, with many issues still to be resolved.

Oxford started strongly at Basingstoke and Dax Hedges put them in front after a wonderful set-up.

Warren Jones took a controversial penalty for hooking, but Stars stood firm.

On his return to the ice, Jones made the right sort of impact by adding their second.

The period ended with Stars taking a powerplay into the next one after a slashing penalty.

And they took full advantage with Joe Oliver dispatching a shot from 20 yards.

Basingstoke pulled a goal back when Ryan Sutton scored after receiving the puck from Sam Dollin.

But Stars rallied well and forced a Basingstoke penalty from Michael Leary. Joe Oliver then shot from the blue line to make it 4-1.

Jones was penalised again, this time for roughing, but again Oxford were able to keep Buffalo at bay.

Basingstoke netminder Craig Agass then pulled off a stunning triple save to deny Stars.

Sam Broughton then picked up a penalty for slashing.

Captain Simon Beere added another for Basingstoke, with the puck going in off a Stars player.

After Andy Cox took a hooking penalty, the hosts had the much better powerplay and Ricky Young was called upon to make a great stick save.

Jones picked up his second of the game, assisted by Jacob Smith, before Nick Oliver got in on the act.

But Basingstoke were not finished, and Sutton scored to make it 6-3.

Then Mark Pitts was penalised for slashing, and when Greg Martyn threw the stick in the direction of the puck, it gave Stars a two-man advantage.

Smith extended Oxford’s lead after a bullet pass from Joe Oliver.

Joe Edwards cracked home Oxford’s eighth and Josh Oliver added No 9 to seal a crushing victory – and spark wild title celebrations.
