VALE of White Horse Schools’ two squads experienced mixed fortunes at the ESFA Isle of Wight Festival.

For the first time in its 26 years on the island, the under 14 event included a tournament for under 13 sides.

Vale Under 14s recovered from losing 2-0 to the Isle of Wight and 3-1 to Bridgwater Reds to draw 2-2 with East Riding, before finishing on a high note with a 4-2 victory over Yeovil.

Meanwhile, Vale Under 13s won two and lost two of their four games.

They beat West Cornwall Blacks 8-0 and East Riding 5-4, but went down 3-1 to Barnsley and 3-2 against Leeds.

Two second-half goals from Finlay Phillips sent Vale Under 14s spinning to defeat against Isle of Wight in their opener at the IOW Community Club, Cowes.

Vale slumped to a second successive loss when they found Bridgwater too strong at Medina High School, Newport, with Ewan Jones’s long-range free-kick providing their only comfort.

However, they rallied to share the spoils with East Riding at Rookley FC after twice being pegged back, Charlie Rowland and Jack Marshall netted for Vale, while the Yorkshire side missed an early penalty.

Rowland and Jones scored braces as Vale signed off by beating Yeovil at Seaclose Park, Newport, with all the goals coming in the second half.

Vale Under 13s took the lead against Barnsley at the IOW Community Club through James Darling’s solo effort.

But the south Yorkshire side hit back to score three times to take victory.

James Spruyt grabbed a hat-trick as Vale then crushed West Cornwall 8-0 at Seaclose Park.

Chris Gould hit a brace, while Nico Cheesman, Harry Mountford and another individual effort from Darling wrapped up their impressive tally.

Vale let a two-goal lead slip as they went down to Leeds at Cowes Sports FC.

George Carder and Spruyt put Vale in charge, but Leeds rallied to win.

Vale finished off with a narrow win over East Riding in a high-scoring affair at Medina High School.

Nathan Baker, Kieron Kirby, Ben Barrett, Spruyt and Tom Menzies were the Vale marksmen.
