OXFORD University finished runners-up in Premier Division 1 of the Men's South League after going down 3-0 away to champions Brighton & Hove.

The Dark Blues needed to win and then hope lowly Milton Keynes could spring a major surprise against the south coast club the following day.

But it was not to be as goals from Rob Cornell, Sam Rose and Simon Turner proved too much for the students and gave Brighton the three points they needed for the title.

And they put the icing on the cake by thrashing Milton Keynes 7-1.

The season still represents a major success for the Dark Blues, however, with only three defeats from 22 matches.

Oxford Hawks were well below strength for their final fixture against relegated West Hampstead, but shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw at Banbury Road North.

With only seven first-teamers available, they called up a number of younger members, who did not let them down. The visitors led 2-0 before Hawks hit back when 15-year-old Dom Maclachlan notched his first goal for the 1st XI. Another of their youngsters, Tom Best, made it all-square at half-time.

West Hampstead regained the lead after the break, but Hawks equalised through captain Tom Godding.

Dan Smyth (2), Callum MacKenzie and Sam Fisher were on the mark as Oxford beat Ashford 4-2 in MBB&O Regional Division 1.

Witney missed their chance to clinch promotion from Regional 2 after a 4-3 defeat to fellow title contenders Maidenhead.

Tim Hardy (2) and Justin Peel scored the goals.

Witney remain top, but must take at least a point from their final game against third-placed Newbury to avoid missing out.
