Damian Batt felt Oxford United’s entire disappointing season was summed up in their 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

A superb finish from Joel Grant in the first half provided the only goal of the game as United tasted defeat for the fourth time in five outings.

It was an all-too familiar pattern to the game, with several good chances going begging as the U’s failed to score at home for the third time in five games.

Batt was bitterly frustrated to see the side unable to correct flaws which have dogged them for much of the campaign.

He said: “It’s been the story of the season. We felt that we were the better team and we created the better chances.

“But one lapse in defence and they scored, while we haven’t scored again.

“It is disappointing because when I do the press after games it seems to be the same thing.

“We seem to play well, create a load of chances and we’re not taking them.

“I think everyone who is a part of the club feels disappointed with the way it’s been this season.”

Jon-Paul Pittman came as close as anyone to finding an equaliser.

The forward, who scored for Wycombe on their last visit to the Kassam two years ago, struck the post with a shot from an acute angle.

He said: “When things are going your way those hit the inside of the post and go in, but unfortunately for me and the team we didn’t quite manage to get that goal.

“At times it was good and free-flowing, but at other times it was a little bit edgy.

“When results haven’t quite gone your way it can get like that at times.”

The 26-year-old looked bright on his first start since dislocating a shoulder in December.

Despite taking some pleasure in completing only his second 90 minutes of the season, Pittman’s satisfaction was subdued by the result.

He said: “I can draw that positive from it, but when you lose it’s not the same.

“I’m glad I’ve played 90 minutes, but I’ve finished a loser, so it’s not a great feeling.”
