Andy Whing says he is fit and ready to make a comeback if required as Oxford United head to Plymouth Argyle today.

The U’s are in need of some experience, as the loss of several senior players to injury has coincided with a return of just one point from their last five games.

Whing’s return would be very welcome as the side look to halt the slide at Home Park.

The versatile 28-year-old, who can play in the back four or in midfield, has endured two lengthy spells on the sidelines this season and has missed the last 11 weeks with an ankle injury.

He is unlikely to be able to play 90 minutes, but after being an unused substitute in the last two games, Whing is happy to put himself forward, if needed.

He said: “I’ve been training for the last couple of weeks now, so whenever the gaffer decides to give me another chance I think I’m ready to get back in. “Obviously it will take me a bit of time to get 100 per cent fit, but I think I’m more than ready after the fitness work I’ve put in during the last couple of weeks.

“I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Everything is going well, touch wood. I’m still working hard in the gym – hopefully I can carry on until the end of the season.”

United are not expected to make many changes to the side which started Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Fleetwood Town.

Tom Craddock (groin) remains a doubt, so Deane Smalley, who scored twice in the 2-1 win against the Pilgrims in August, should continue up front with James Constable.

U’s manager Chris Wilder said: “Plymouth are another big club in the league who would have been expecting to do a lot better. “They’ve played a lot of teams around them and had a couple of good results.

“We’ll respect them, but there’s nothing for us to be frightened of.”

Plymouth boss John Sheridan has yet to taste defeat since taking over last month, having taken eight points from his four games in charge.

He will again be without strikers Warren Feeney (groin) and Nick Chadwick (suspended).

Lee Cox, who spent the first half of the season on loan at United, is expected to start in midfield for Argyle.
