TOM Voyce believes London Welsh can boost their survival hopes by doubling their Aviva Premiership points tally before the end of 2012.
New recruit Voyce, who starts at left wing at home to Bath tomorrow, said he came to Welsh because he wanted a challenge rather than cruising in mid-table.
And the 31-year-old former England man says the Exiles, who are on ten points, have what it takes to stay up.
“I like my stats and I would quite like to be on 20 points by the end of December, which I think is definitely achievable,” said Voyce.
“It is a case of picking up as many bonus points as possible and I think we would need 32 to 34 points to stay up.”
He added: “I think we are getting better and learning quickly.
“We have got a good forward pack, which some teams, even in the Premiership, don’t have.
“That pack will come into its own in the winter months and it is up to us backs to make the most of it.”
Voyce made his debut in last week’s 29-19 defeat by Wasps, one of his former clubs.
But it was far from a smooth transition to join the Exiles after leaving Gloucester at the end of last season.
“With the things that happened at the end at Gloucester and Bryan Redpath leaving, a lot of us were in awkward contract situations,” said Voyce.
After looking at various options with his agent, Voyce joined Welsh following a successful trial period.
“I just wanted to make sure it was the right move. I wanted a challenge in my career.
“I could quite happily say that if it was Newcastle coming in for me, I wouldn’t have gone for it. I wanted to be back in London.
“I have known London Welsh in the background since I was at Wasps and knew some of the players already.
“I wanted to be part of it.”
