THERE were some consistent returns from most of last weekend’s fixtures as the Thames and Thame produced some good chub.
The practice match for the third round of the Oxford Winter League was fished by 25 anglers on the Thames at Radley, which had lost most of its colour, but still had a fair bit of pace.
Dave Kirk (Fox Match Isis) drew the well-known chub peg known as the beach, catching a number of small chub, plus a couple of decent ones on the feeder and maggot, to come out on top with 12.2.0.
Darren Wright (Sensas A4) drew the chub peg below the boathouse to catch two big ones, including a cracker of 6lb, plus roach and small chub on pole and maggot for 11.12.0.
Third spot went to Martin Phipps (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) just an ounce behind with roach and small chub on pole and maggot.
Pete Clarke was a comfortable winner of the latest Marston AC FTB match on the Cherwell.
He caught roach and perch on the pole, alternating between breadpunch and chop-ped worm for a winning 8.10.0.
Steve Tompkins was second with 3.8.0 of small perch and roach on pole with either red maggot or punch on the hook, and Anthony Tomkins used identical tactics for 3.5.0 and third place. Eight fished.
The Long Meadow stretch of the Cherwell was not so forthcoming for the eight members of Tackley Estates AC who fished their Roland Proffitt Trophy match.
A paltry 1.15.0 of small roach and dace on pole and maggot gave Anthony Alder the spoils. Frank Malone and Stephen Malone were second and third with 0.14.8 and 0.9.0 respectively.
The Thame was on song for Oxford Waltonians’ Teams of Three match at Wheatley Bridge, which was won by Paul Armstrong with 11.7.0 of chub on pole and maggot.
A nice chub of 5.6.8 gave Callum Russell-Sharp second place with 5.6.8, also on pole with maggot, followed by Martin Gough with 4.7.0 of bits.
Team result: 1 Army’s Three 12pts (on weight countback), 2 Team Playboy 12, 3 Mick’s Marauders 10.
Beehive AC fished for the AS Scientific Shield at a cold and blustery Panshill, which nevertheless produced 540lb from the 16 anglers.
Les Radford had 70lb of carp on pole and maggot for top spot, followed by Kevin Jeacock with 56.0.0 to pole and pellet, to win the Beehive League fished over 16 matches.
Jason Bean won Kidlington AS’s Henry Clarke Cup on the Oxford canal at Grovelands, with a 4lbs 2oz bag of perch caught on worm fished over chopped worm and caster.
