James Roberts continued his incredible goal streak as Oxford United beat Yeovil Town 4-2 in the FA Youth Cup first round on Wednesday night.
The 16-year-old striker released by Wycombe Wanderers earlier this year, scored twice in the first half at Thame United, taking his tally to an impressive 14 goals in just six games.
His brace sandwiched Liam MacDevitt’s close-range effort for Yeovil as the U’s took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Roberts then turned provider, setting up Jermaine Udumaga to make it 3-1 midway through the second half.
MacDevitt was on target again, pulling a goal back four minutes from time, but Callum O’Dowda calmed any nerves by nodding in United’s fourth in stoppage time.
Youth team manager Chris Allen was pleased with the display, which was the side’s eighth successive victory in all competitions.
He said: “I asked them at the start for desire, work rate and energy and they showed that again.
“James can’t stop scoring, I kind of had a go at him because he’s making the other boys look a bit silly, but he’s not listening.”
The U’s will have to manage without Roberts for the second-round tie against Plymouth Argyle on November 17, following the 16-year-old’s red card against Cheltenham last week.
Allen added: “Plymouth are a good side and like to play, but we’re up for the challenge.
“We’ve got a good group and they work hard for each other, so they won’t get carried away with anything.”
United's next game is away to rivals Swindon Town in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday.
Oxford Utd: Cavanagh, Wright, Niangasa, Long, Lynn, Hughes (Sellick 63), Ashby, Humphreys (Woodley 83), O’Dowda, Udumaga, Roberts. Subs not used: Ekpiteta, Gee, Hill.
