THE biggest travelling contingent of Oxford United’s season so far will make the short trip to Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow, and Ryan Clarke is determined to pay back their loyalty by helping to deliver a result.
An estimated 1,500 supporters are expected to travel down the M40 to Adams Park and cheer on Chris Wilder’s men.
The fans have had little to shout about on the road this season, with Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Rochdale the side’s sixth straight away loss in npower League Two.
Clarke is looking forward to getting such significant backing and is focused on claiming a much-needed result.
He said: “It will be a tough game, but the fans have been great for us this season.
“We don’t count on them giving us a push because we’re all fully motivated, but when they come out in numbers it’s great for us to see.
“When you come out of the tunnel and see a mass of them at an away game it’s pretty impressive and hopefully that’s the case at Wycombe.
“They deserve to see us getting a result.”
The game has an extra edge on it, due to the scheduling of the fixtures.
With no midweek game – a rarity this season – and an FA Cup tie next weekend, there is a ten-day gap between league games after Saturday.
It means tomorrow’s result will define the mood of those connected with the club during the break.
Victory would give the U’s something to build on, while defeat would leave them to stew on another setback.
Clarke said: “Every game is important and we want to get as many points on the board.
“But we definitely want to make sure we go into the break on a high.”
The United stopper felt the last week summed up the club’s season, as the momentum gathered in Saturday’s 5-0 win against Accrington Stanley was squandered at Rochdale.
He said: “We dominated the (Rochdale) game and they didn’t have many chances, but that’s the way things are going at the moment.
“I don’t think we are lacking confidence, we showed what we can do last Saturday when we really started expressing ourselves.
“We know as a group we’re a good team, but we need to prove it on the pitch.
“People will maybe look at taking three points from the last two games as unacceptable, but we’ll be looking to put things right from Tuesday.”
