The tennis courts at a park in Wallingford are ready for the public to use again after the completion of a refurbishment.
The project to revamp the Bull Croft Park courts had an investment of more than £50,000, aiming to provide quality tennis facilities for the community.
It was led by Wallingford Town Council in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
New booking systems and smart gate technology mean it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance and guaranteeing availability.
The courts will be available to book online via the LTA website, and will provide opportunities for children and adults to get active.
A mix of free and low-cost tennis will be available. This includes the LTA’s Free Park Tennis - free, social tennis sessions held on weekend mornings at 10am and delivered by volunteers.
All ages and skill levels are welcome and equipment will be provided.
Local Tennis Leagues will also be hosted on the new courts, encouraging friendly and social competitions.
Councillor Steve Holder, chair of parks, gardens, allotments and open spaces committee, said: "This project forms part of a larger scheme to improve facilities in the Bull Croft Park which will see a new children’s play area, pavilion, adult functional outside gym and steps and bridges to protect the ninth century Saxon fortifications which is currently going through the planning process.
"Archaeological digs have taken place to help form the decision making and we are hoping to have a talk about what was uncovered in the New Year.”
Bookings will cost £6 per court per hour, or residents can purchase an annual household pass for £45.
Funds raised will be reinvested towards ensuring the courts are maintained to a high standard for many years to come.
The refurbishments are part of a nationwide project delivered by the LTA to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, as it looks to get more people involved in the sport.
High participation rates among women, girls, and traditionally under-represented communities have been seen at the Bull Croft Park courts.
Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, said: "We are delighted to be working with Wallingford Town Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active.
"This investment is part of the LTA’s Parks Tennis Project, and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come.
"We will also be working closely with the council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court."
