PLANS for a circular glass building in Walton Street have been submitted to Oxford City Council.
The proposed Blavatnik School of Government, to be built opposite Oxford University Press in Walton Street, has been made possible by a £75m endowment by American industrialist Leonard Blavatnik.
It has been designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, best known in the UK for the creation of Tate Modern in London.
The university said: “With this proposal we aim to provide a project that can act as a focal point for the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter which complements its historic urban setting.”
The building would be 72 feet high – taller than the OUP buildings and the former St Paul’s Church, now Freud’s Bar next door – but the university said the highest parts would be stepped back to prevent it dominating Walton Street.
