These historic images of Oxford are just some of the fascinating photos on display at a city centre rare prints and maps shop.

Sanders of Oxford, in High Street, is displaying 300 old photos of the city and the surrounding area in the biggest exhibition it has staged.

The photos, which date from between 1860 and 1930, include some taken by the renowned Victorian photographer Henry Taunt.

The exhibition was launched on Friday and runs until Saturday, November 1.

Assistant manager Phil Marston said: "Sanders has been going for about 40 years in its current guise, and this is the biggest exhibition it has ever staged.

"We have produced quite a detailed catalogue containing biographies of the photographers and we hope lots of people come and have a look at these historic photos of Oxford.

"We kept getting asked for antique photos of Oxford by tourists or parents wanting pictures of the colleges their children go to, so we thought it would be a good idea to stage this commercial exhibition. The prices range from about £25 to £750 for a one-off picture of Magdalen Tower which is printed on glass.

"All the images on show are on paper and are derived from glass plates, but in the 1930s technology changed and people started to use actual film.

"We have built this collection up over the past two to three years and all the photos feature views of Oxford and the surrounding area.

"Some of the photos were bought at auction or from other dealers."

Opening hours are from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and on Sunday from 11am to 5pm. For details, call 01865 242590.
