Unlucky not to have won the Oxford Division during the league campaign, the Green Road Club (Kidlington) are compensating by the bucketful in the post-season tabletops.

Following on from their success in the ‘Rock and Pop’ a fortnight ago, last Thursday they claimed the Oxford Mail sponsored ‘Supplementary Cup’, in the leg held at the North Oxford Conservative Club (Summertown).

Whilst their trophy cabinet may now be bulging at the seams with silverware, this latest addition was only secured by the narrowest of margins.

Their grand total of 150 was a mere one point better than that achieved by both the Seacourt Bridge (Botley) and the Crown (Church Enstone), with the Royal Sun (Begbroke) only two points further back in fourth.

On the same evening, the Premier Division outfits together with all the divisional winners battled it out for the ‘Trophy’, also gratefully supported by this esteemed publication.

Despite only finishing mid-table in the Premiership, the Ploughman’s Bunch! (Wolvercote) have swept all before them in the tabletops this winter, and they added their sixth (out of a possible nine) to the tally with a truly outstanding performance, ending no less than 24 points ahead of their nearest challenger!

I guess if there was an award for ‘Team of the Year’, they would get that too.

This week witnesses the curtain coming down on the season, celebrated by ‘Finals Night’; a combination of the presentation of various gongs followed by a quiz, the winner of which will be the recipient of the ‘Ted Payne Memorial’ in tribute to the man who for many years ran this county-wide competition.

Next week’s column will contain a short report of proceedings accompanied by this season’s ‘roll of honour’.
