PART of a former lunatic asylum earmarked for shops is to become offices, flats and a hairdresser instead.

Thomas Homes and the Homes and Communities Agency have unveiled their new plans for part of the Fairmile Hospital site in Cholsey.

The developers, which are converting the old asylum into 130 homes, originally said they would develop this particular part as shop space and a restaurant, but in their latest plans have said there was no interest in renting the space.

Now they have submitted a plan for ‘two office units, a hair salon and retail unit together with 14 starter homes in the form of nine one-bedroom units and five two-bedroom units’.

They have even offered the retail unit with two and half years’ free rent.
