THE scrutiny committee at Oxford City Council will meet tonight.

Councillors are set to discuss safeguarding of language students, progress on cycling schemes and plans to further cut carbon emissions.

They will also consider a report on air quality, which urges senior councillors to take 'further action' to reduce pollution.

It comes after Labour's John Tanner warned air quality in the city could get worse when thousands of shoppers flock to the reopened Westgate Shopping Centre next year.

He added he was 'horrified by the thought of having to choose between allowing the Westgate to open and poisoning the Oxford public'.
