A SENIOR Oxford councillor has raised 'grave concerns' about the impact of upcoming benefit cuts.

Susan Brown said the lowering of the benefit cap due in December would hit families struggling with high rents.

Nearly 1,000 children and their families in the city are likely to be affected by the change, which will lower the maximum claim to £20,000 per household.

In a motion to Oxford City Council, due to be debated next Monday, Ms Brown said: "This council notes that yet again, a different rate applies in London and yet the cost of living in Oxford is comparable."

She called on council officers to raise the issue with MPs and ministers.
