SWIMMERS from The Cherwell School hit their targets at a national competition by finishing in the top three in two categories.

The junior girls team finished in third place in both the freestyle and medley relays at the English Schools Swimming Association Secondary Schools Team Championships in London on Saturday.

Ahead of the event the school's head of PE Neil Busby said the girls' goal was to take at least one podium finish.

They went into the event in a strong position having qualified in fifth place out of 260 English secondary schools.

The senior girls also put in a strong performance finishing eighth in both the freestyle and medley.

Mr Busby said: "All the girls were fantastic and we did it.

"It is a fantastic achievement, we are very proud."

The gala at the Aquatics Centre in Stratford saw the top 30 teams in the country compete in a series of categories.

Of the 11 girls from The Cherwell School 10 are members of City of Oxford Swimming Club.

The junior girls team picked up medals and shields for their efforts.
