FIVE secondary school teachers were nominated by their students to receive awards for tackling bullying.

Sarah Stewart, Pippa Goodfellow, Caroline Smith, Geraint Matthews and Leanne Avis all teach at King Alfred's Academy in Wantage.

Their students put their names forward for the first ever Power For Good awards run by The Anti-Bullying Alliance.

The awards, launched to mark 'Anti-bullying Week', were designed to recognise teachers and school staff who go beyond the call of duty to help children with bullying, relationships, family life and mental health.

King Alfred's headteacher Jo Halliday said: "We were thrilled that colleagues at King Alfred’s were nominated and, more importantly, that students recognise that the staff are there to support them and help them through their education.

"We know what a positive influence teachers and members of our support staff team have on their students and believe it is vital we approach the topic of bullying to ensure everyone who attends King Alfred’s understands that bullying in any form is unacceptable."

More than 100 individual students or classes around the country nominated teachers and just two winners were picked, neither of whom came from King Alfred's.
