A PLAYGROUP in Wolvercote has been handed a good rating for the second time in a row following an inspection.

St Peters Playgroup in St Peters Church, First Turn, was given Ofsted's second-highest ranking in all areas after inspectors visited on November 1.

The school was praised for providing children with a wide range of learning experiences, which ensured children made 'good progress' in all areas of their learning.

Partnerships with parents were said to be strong and staff were deemed to engage parents successfully in their children's learning.

In her report inspector Amanda Perkin said: "All children make good progress, in relation to their starting points.

"They develop a good range of skills to support their future learning, including their move to school.

"Children develop good physical skills, for example, they have good mobility.

"They learn to talk confidently and develop good early reading and writing skills.

"For example, young children sing nursery rhymes and older children sound letters of the alphabet and write the letters in their name.

"All children behave positively."

She said the nursery, which has 19 children aged from two to four, could improve further if teaching was monitored more effectively and if staff built on children's understanding of operating simple equipment and using technology for a purpose.
