A SUPERMARKET in Carterton will donate a tree to a primary school so pupils can grow and eat their own apples.

Morrisons Carterton will deliver the three-year-old British apple tree sapling to Carterton Primary School, in Burford Road, next Monday.

It will be delivered along with two crates of apples so that children have a chance to taste the fruit which the tree will eventually produce.

Kimberley Brain, community champion at Morrisons Carterton, said: “We hope our British apple tree will be a lovely addition to the school’s playground.

"We hope that the children will enjoy watering, pruning and looking after it whilst it grows - and that it bears much fruit for all the school pupils for many years to come.”

The traditional British apple tree will take a decade to grow to full maturity.

When mature, it will be four metres tall and will grow enough apples to feed a full class of more than 30 pupils at Autumn harvest time.

Morrisons sells 500 million apples every year. It stocks more than 26 varieties of British apples during the British season.

Uniquely, Morrisons owns its own apple grading and packing site in Northamptonshire and works with over 20 of British growers year-round.
