NO doubt there is a problem with too much traffic on roads into Oxford including the A40, and much of it is peak-hour commuter traffic.
One way to reduce traffic is through ‘demand management’, especially a workplace parking levy.
The Transport Act 2000 allows councils to levy a charge for parking provided by employers for their staff parking.
So far, only Nottingham aims to use this levy, planning to raise £14m a year for 23 years and spend it on public transport.
If Oxford City Council was to use such a levy in Oxford, then commuter traffic could be cut and money provided for better public transport.
It’s about time councils started being smart about tackling traffic: Oxford City Council – ideally in partnership with the county council, should carry out an assessment of the potential for using a workplace parking levy to make life better for us all.
