For all those who want to do more than just listen to jazz, there is an opportunity to learn more of the sinister art at a special jazz workshop at Wood Green School, Witney, on Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm. Led by London pianist Geoff Castle, assisted by Andy Crowdy and Alvin Roy, this event is open to all musicians of all ages and abilities - and you get to play in a concert in the evening. Ring the school for details, or just turn up.

On the listening side, on Sunday there is the last of the concerts organised by George Haslam at the Holywell Music Room featuring two Argentinian musicians, pianist Ruben Ferrero and saxophonist Pablo Ledesma. Judging from a CD I have, these are two very vibrant players in their own country.

On Wednesday, the Oxford Improvisers have their monthly gig at the Port Mahon. This will be an evening of improvisations with video, organised by Bruno Guastalla and myself. On Thursday, the Spin (at the Wheatsheaf pub off Oxford's High Street) features one of the UK's best jazz violinists, Chris Garrick, alongside one of the most imaginative and subtle pianists, Dave Gordon. They are backed by Pete Oxley, guitar, and the remarkable Russ Morgan on drums. Garrick and Oxley are also at the Village Hall in Goring on Friday. On the same day guitarist Pete Downes and trio plus the late Ronnie Scott's trumpeter, Dick Pearce, are at the Carswell Golf and Country Club, near Faringdon.

Looking forward to Saturday of next week, there is a very special concert organised by Oxford Improvisers at the Jacqueline du Pr Music Building. which is listed in the Oxford Contemporary Music leaflet but with the wrong date. This features three leading figures in free improvisation and is an event to put in the diary. First, there is a quartet with two New York musicians, trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum (pictured), "one of the most brilliant masters of his generation", and drummer Harris Eisenstadt. Both players are in Britain for a brief tour. Second, there is a trio with the British pianist Veryan Weston, who has been a crucial figure in the British jazz scene since the 1970s.
