I HAD to read the letter from David Speke about speed limits (ViewPoints, October 11) several times to grasp his point. He starts off by wondering why anyone sticks to the ever-growing 50mph limit on our roads, then states that this limit is the ‘favourite’ for speed camera vans.
He then moves on to drivers ignoring the 30mph limit because ‘they are not in their local area’.
I hate to spoil his illusion that only local people are prosecuted, as I know to my cost that mobile speed cameras located in many villages are completely geographically blind in that as long as the registration number is recognised by the DVLA, a nasty surprise will drop on the offender’s doormat.
I have to admit to occasionally exceeding speed limits (resulting in three points on my licence currently) but also to being one of the 50mph limit ‘brakers and stickers’.
With regard to his point about scrapping the 50mph limits, I think that he is going to be very disappointed, due to the fact that affected roads are getting more and more commonplace and such limits are being extended regularly.
My own opinion is that, in time, every mile of every single carriageway road in the country will be limited to 50mph.
