COUNCILLOR Ian Hudspeth’s argument (Oxford Mail, September 15) for not dualling the A40 further between Witney and Oxford is ridiculous.

He claims that adding extra lanes will “attract more drivers, not cut down numbers”.

But the road is already far over capacity and the situation will only worsen if action is not taken.

This has inevitable knock-on effects for the whole area, as drivers continue to seek alternative routes to avoid A40 congestion.

A fully dualled road should indeed draw traffic back on to the A40 where it belongs rather than the unsuited minor roads around.

Transport planners need to bear in mind that the A40 is not just a commuting corridor between Carterton, Witney and Oxford.

It is a major east-west artery that carries substantial traffic (heavy goods, commercial and private) to and from the M40 and A34.

Further inaction from the county council and national government is inexcusable and the single carriageway section of the A40 west of Oxford must be upgraded as a priority.
