The compassion shown by the family of Joanna Braithwaite is humbling.
They have lost a daughter and words cannot describe how that must feel.
Pensioner Stephen Bateman has admitted it was his actions, at the wheel of a cement mixer lorry, that caused her death.
However, Joanna’s parents did not want the justice system to seek revenge or retribution.
Instead, it was the couple’s generosity that helped keep 75-year-old Bateman out of prison.
At a time of great personal tragedy, they had made their own judgement on the accident and were certain that Bateman did not intend to hurt their daughter, and they bear him no grudge.
Instead of damning his actions, the couple made a plea for all drivers and cyclists to take care on our roads.
Their compassion and dignity should serve as an example to us all.
