WALK past the East Oxford Community Centre any Wednesday lunchtime and you will be irresistibly drawn in by the sweet aromas of goat curry, salt fish and ackee.
The African and African Caribbean Kultural Heritage Initiative (ACKHI) is offering a weekly taste of the tropics from East Africa to the West Indies.
This week hungry punters filled the centre between noon and 2pm to eat in and take away the delicious fare.
Organiser Junie James said: “We served up curried goat, Jamaican stewed chicken and escovitch fish which is twice marinated with a Spanish twist. We welcome anyone and everyone. We get Europeans, Asians, and tourists who just happen to see it advertised.
“Doing this has been a great generator of interest in the community centre.”
ACKHI was set up by Oxford residents to bring together and promote the cultural heritage of Africa and African origins. It works with the Pegasus Theatre, run by Jamaican ex-pat Euton Daley, the Fusion Arts Community and the African Women’s Art Collective.
Money raised goes towards renting office space at the back of the community centre, to organise all their community events such as African History Season.
