A woman is launching "hands-on" after-school clubs in Summertown to help children get excited by science.

Anna Lee, founder of Science Adventures, decided to offer the programme for six- to 12-year-olds after hearing that fewer children than ever are taking science at GCSE and A-Level.

Practical classes starting next month novon Tuesday and Saturday afternoons at the North Oxford Community Centre in Summertown will teach children about geology, planets and toy technology through fun and accessible methods.

Pupils will build and paint their own rocket launchers, satellites, Mars buggies and parachutes using everyday materials, while learning about the principles and vocabulary of science.

Ms Lee, who has three degrees, said: "It is based on the simple idea that when children are excited they learn better. I find they arrive tired after school, but once they are in the club they really enjoy building things."

The former teacher set up Science Adventures after her own daughter enjoyed a similar programme in the US.

She hopes that her club will complement the school curriculum by helping children "learn by doing".

Ms Lee's son Cheni Moon, aged eight, said: "I like the Mars buggy best, because I liked making the camera and the solar panels."

Ms Lee is now looking for grants and sponsorship to help her initiative spread to East Oxford. The North Oxford Community Centre, a voluntary members association, also provides a venue for children's after-school music and chess classes.

Rita Harris, editor of the North Oxford Association Newsletter, said: "This is a new class and we are very pleased to have her. It is for an age group which we want to encourage at the centre because they are members of the future."
