A man was found unconscious with a serious head injury in Catte Street, Oxford, on Tuesday morning.
He was discovered on the pavement near St Mary the Virgin Church at about 7am and taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
He is 6ft, white and was wearing a blue sweater and jeans. Police believe he is aged 44 but are trying to confirm his identity and how he was injured.
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
Det Sgt Lewis Prescott-Mayling, of Oxford CID, said: “We are not ruling out any possibility at this stage, and we urge anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible.”
