YOUR report of the police’s speed check on the 20mph limit in St Giles’ (September 1) says the police stated: “most motorists ignored the limit”. This is not surprising, as most motorists probably think that 20mph is an unrealistic speed limit and should never have been imposed on many roads in Oxford.
Its absurdity is shown by the fact that even a city council roadsweeper was doing 29mph! The five police officers involved surely had better things to do.
A recent letter in this newspaper told of someone who had to wait four days for the police to respond to a theft.
Surely the police would be better employed dealing with such incidents rather than enforcing an unreasonable speed limit.
