IT’S either the trip of a lifetime or the road journey from hell.

But next month three servicemen based at RAF Brize Norton will be taking to the streets for charity.

On Friday, September 7, Cpl James Booth, SAC(T) Daniel Wellstead and Sgt Mark McNeil will leave from the West Oxfordshire base and make their way to Malta and back in a 1990 Reliant Robin.

This is the second time the three servicemen have gone the distance in the three-wheeled car.

Just two years ago they travelled to Gibraltar to raise money for the John Radcliffe Hospital ’s Bellhouse Ward in the Children’s Hospital.

Cpl Booth, 29, said: “We found the car on the internet and got it from a dealer just outside Wantage.

“Two years ago the engine broke before we left so we had to stop and let the air out of it every day.

“We are a bit nervous. I hope the car doesn’t break down as many times as the last time we did this.

“The RAF has been very accommodating and the facilities here have been very good. The paint shop painted the car for us.”

For the past six months the three friends have been fixing up the car in preparation for its big trip.

Over a period of 13 days the trio will cover a distance of around 4,200 miles, travelling about 350 miles a day.

Not only will all three of them have to squeeze into the small car for nearly two weeks, but they will have to fit their supplies, a few spare parts and their tools into the Reliant Robin as well.

Cpl Booth said: “It is going to be a bit of a squeeze.

“My father had a Reliant Robin but I haven’t grown any more attached to them in spite of this! “The last time we got back I would have been quite happy to set fire to it but I don’t know what we will do with it this time.

Any money the team raises will go towards Everyman, a charity which raises money to support those with prostate and testicular cancer. For more information, visit everymanformalta.co.uk and to donate to the cause, visit justgiving.com/Everyman-for-Malta
