THE Enstone-based Renault F1 team retained both the drivers' and constructors' world championships after today's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Oxford-based Fernando Alonso finished second at Interlagos behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa, to become only the eighth driver to win back-to-back drivers' titles.

His only rival for the world title, Michael Schumacher, competing in his last F1 race, suffered a puncture early on pushing him to the back of the field, finished a remarkable fourth, behind Jenson Button, driving a Brackley-built Honda.

The first words from Alonso, who leaves the Renault team for McLaren next season, were for the Oxfordshire team. He said: "Thank you for this season and I wish you the best for the future."

Takuma Sato, driving for the Leafield-based Super Aguri team, finished tenth.

Neither of the Grove-based WilliamsF1 team cars finished the race.
