THANK you, Jeremy Smith (features editor of the Oxford Mail), for highlighting the issues around public toilet provision in Oxford. I have fought for better toilets for many years.
The obvious needs are: 1. Clear signs to the existing toilets – showing which have disabled provision 2. Later opening – in Summertown the loos are closed at or before 5pm, while the shops are open until 6pm or later 3. Attendants where possible – though this may not be a top priority 4. More loos, especially more for the disabled.
I am less concerned about flowers and books – we should not support a ‘world-class’ facility at Gloucester Green at the expense of others needing simpler upgrades.
To repeat the need for signs: when visiting a place you do not know, you look for a sign to the nearest toilet provision. Oxford is not very good at that.
As we have more than nine million visitors a year, and want them to return or stay longer, we should ensure that this basic human need is well catered for.
