THESE children were honoured to have an Olympic athlete in their midst.

Pentathlete Richard Phelps had represented Britain in the Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988.

He was a member of the British modern pentathlon team which won the bronze medal in Seoul.

He visited Marston Middle School in Oxford in February 1990 to thank pupils for supporting the England team which was taking part in the Commonwealth Games at that time in Auckland, New Zealand.

The children had run more than two miles round their school grounds to raise money to help support the team.

Mr Phelps, who didn’t travel to Auckland, told the children how he began his career in sport at the age of 12 and about how vital their cash would be to the team.

When the picture right was taken, the money from those who sponsored the run was still being counted, but it was intended to give 70 per cent to support the England team and 30 per cent to school funds.

The children were given a photograph of themselves with Mr Phelps and shown a video of previous Commonwealth Games.
