1977 – A40 at Witney opened to cut congestion in Bridge Street
1985 – Oxfordshire County Council suggests building a relief road, to cut town centre traffic, between Cogges and Station Lane
1987 – Campaign against the road started by the late Colin Fowler, of the Campaign to Protect Rural England
1991 – A second plan, to build a road between Stanton Harcourt Road and Station Lane, proposed
1996 – The link road in its current form, running from Oxford Hill to Station Lane, is conceived
1997 – Oxfordshire County Council first wins planning permission to build the link road
2002 – Developers of Madley Park estate agree to fund the Cogges Link Road
2003 – A40 de-trunked, meaning creating a four-way junction on the A40 at Shores Green was a possibility
2004 – An inspector into the West Oxfordshire Local Plan recommends against including the road in the scheme
2010 – Campaigners lose bid to protect Witney Meadows with town green status
2011 – Public inquiry into the compulsory purchase of land needed for the Cogges Link Road opens
2012 – Government rejects the compulsory purchase bid
