Although commenting as chairman of Oxford Pedestrians Association in your report on the victim of a hit-and-run cyclist, (June 16), Sushila Dhall is taking the stance of a cyclist with more to say in mitigation rather then condemnation of cyclists who endanger the safety of pedestrians.
I think most people will be surprised that she observes ‘mostly motorists’ going through red lights and thoughtlessly over pedestrian crossings.
Neither are there any statistics to show whether more people are hit by vehicles than by cyclists and who is at fault. We ought to criticise both, rather than argue who offends more, as if one justifies the other.
I cannot help recalling that a few months ago (December 13, 2011) one of your cycling columnists argued that there was no need for cyclists to observe red lights if there were no vehicles in sight. Perhaps some cyclists agree with him.
