AN OXFORDSHIRE village could see a new sports complex created as part of a major deal with a developer.

A pavilion with cricket and football pitches would be built in Kingston Bagpuize if developer Landframe is given planning permission to put up 50 homes on a site in Abingdon Road.

The application has been put together by youth football club Kingston Colts, Kingston Bagpuize Cricket Club, landowner Virginia Grant, and the developer.

The £10m investment from Landframe could also include a cafe and a new public footpath and cycleway.

Kingston Bagpuize Cricket Club chairman Tom Scrase said Vale of White Horse District Council needed to provide houses and it was a good idea to make sure the village benefits.

He said: “It’s a good thing. The community gets something out of it. The village would get a brand new pavilion. It’s a rickety old thing that is somewhat out of date and in need of replacement.

“The cricket nets are not really fit for purpose. The football club is big and has been growing a lot in the recent years. They are crying out for an upgrade.”

Landframe owns the business park opposite and seven acres of the site, while Mrs Grant owns eight.

She said: “It (the sports ground) has been there for 50 years and we are giving it a new lease, which will be in keeping with a village that is changing, growing and expanding.

“This is the only realistic opportunity to have a new pavilion and upgrade the facilities.”

Ken Cooper, director of Landframe, said: “It’s a win-win. We are providing more houses for the village and at the same time helping to give the village better facilities.”

Ken Dijksman, the firm’s planning consultant, said: “This enables them to have new facilities and permanent facilities overlooked by new houses that will pay for it all.”

The sports ground will be handed on a long-term lease to Kingston Bagpuize Parish Council.

The district council hopes to make a decision on the bid in September.

Melinda Tilley, county councillor for the area, said: “We need more housing, and I think the benefits are superb.

“But whether it gets through planning or not is anybody’s guess.”
